Raising Hammers to Raise Homes: County Joins Carter Work Project & Habitat for Humanity to Create Affordable Housing

About 100 Mecklenburg County employees, including members of the Board of County Commissioners, joined Habitat for Humanity and the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project this week to build dozens of affordable homes for residents. Mecklenburg County is a platinum sponsor of the project, infusing $500,000 that funds the construction directly. This commitment addresses the Board of County Commissioners’ housing insecurity priority.

A child’s health and well-being during the first three years of life affects future learning, behavior, and health. It is the most sensitive period for a child’s developing brain and body. But many families face challenges during these years. Consistent with the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners’ priority to expand services that promote early childhood development, the County has introduced the Prenatal to Three Strategic Plan which works to improve the trajectory of child and family well-being in those early years.
